It can take several days and 3 or 4 reboots for it to speed up. First
defrag. The boot prefetch will kick in after the 3 rd reboot. It takes
several days for the prefetch folder to be rebuilt. And the in built
optimization kicks in every 3 days. After that defrag again.
If you're still having problems after a week take a look at this link:

What's your point? Who said he was a woman?

XP SP2 installs temp files, restart in safe mode, disable your screensaver
and do disk clean up and defrag. Also click start > Run > type in
"msconfig", without quotes > startup tab > uncheck any unnecessary programs
that might be starting up with the system.

Uninstall it and wait for Microsoft to fix it.
Use an antivirus program.
Use free programs like Spybot and Ad-Aware
Go to PCworld.com for the downloads.
Hated how slow SP2 made my machine, seemed like it
duplicated poorly what those other programs do very well!

An initial slowdown after installing SP2 is not uncommon. There is
nothing to fix. It's related to file fragmentation and the loss of boot
and program prefetch history which has to be rebuilt. This problem can
be easily addressed. No need to remove SP2 for this. That's bad advice.
