Jonathan,
First you should open each program, and it "Preferences, User Settings, =
or Tools menus. Check and see if there is an option to have the Program =
start when Windows is started and/or when an Internet Connection (if you =
are connected to the Internet continuously such as cable or DSL) is =
present. Uncheck this/these features.

Greetings --

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Have you looked at the "System Configuration Utility"? To open it:
Start/Run/type in "msconfig" , minus the quote markers, and click "OK". When
it opens, click the "Startup" tab and you will see a list of programs
loading at Startup. Remove the checkmark for any you do not wish to load.
