I have tried to load SP2 several times on my machine but
each time the install hangs. I cannot even get it to
initialize anymore. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks.

1. Download the full version, 266 MB, from here:

Download and Deploy Service Pack 2 to Multiple Computers
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2predl.mspx

2. Order the CD free from MS:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default810.mspx

3. Get a free CD from stores like Staples or Office Depot

4. Get the CD attached to the cover of recent PC magazines.

I'm getting this one error message that I cannot figure out. My computer
shows Automatic Updates enabled. Have never had any trouble with the upgrades
prior to this. Can't locate the other two applications mentioned below or
what is actually disabled. Any clues? I did just upgrade to Norton 2004; any
connection?

Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is
disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of
critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable
downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting.

Go to Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services

Look for Automatic Update, double click and set Start up type to
Automatic. click Apply

Look further down for Background Intelligent; similarly set that
Automatic (or manual is enough if you are going to go to Windows Update
for yourself)

Then close and restart.
