obtaining XP updates without upgrading to SP2

I have multiple machines, running Windows XP, SP0 or SP1.
I would like to obtain all of the updates, except SP2.

If I disable the XP SP2 auto update feature, will I be
able to select the updates I want?

I have noticed that on some of the machines, when I go to
the Windows update site, the "view installation history"
feature informs me that I have not obtained any updates.
But I have obtained all critical updates prior to the
launch of SP2.

I know how to determine which updates I have installed by
checking iuhist.XML.

If you use the tool, Windows Update and Automatic Update will work
exactly as before except you will not be offered SP-2.
Remember SP-2 is stopped for a limited time only.

The View Installation History only applies to Windows Update and
Automatic Update.
If you directly installed the update, it will not be in the
Installation History.

Yes, you will still be able to get other updates after disabling the
delivery of SP2.

Jupiter:
Perhaps my case is "special", but the "view Installation
history" feature does not list the critical updates that
were downloaded & installed from the Windows UPdate site.

It's a fairly safe bet that it will be 'forced' upon users eventually.
They've already stated that the IE security enhancements brought in by
SP2 will not be available for older versions of Windows, and you can
bet you will soon be seeing software that requires SP2 to run properly.
Microsoft have put back the date by which Autoupdate will push SP2
onto corporate machines (I think it's March next year?). But, as far
as they are concerned, SP2 has no major problems, has been thoroughly
tested, and will be integrated by the middle of next year. Any
glitches surfacing will have fixes, as always.

that SP2 will somehow be *forced* upon those who may have taken
an informed decision to avoid it...

If you are not using that tool, that information does not apply to
you.
No one is forced to install SP-2.
However if you have AU enabled, SP-2 will be installed once the 240
days have passed.

You will most likely not install SP-2 since there are no plans for a
SP-2a and I doubt there will be a SP-2a.
I guess SP-3 will be available in about two years.

OK. I don't have AU enabled - I don't allow *any* software to
install onto my system without my being aware of what is
happening. I don't use MS software for web work, e-mail or
newsgroups at all, so I'm less vulnerable to the security flaws
that only affect IE and OE/Outlook... (Mozilla and Agent here, if
you're interested, along with Norton AV, Norton Personal
Firewall, Ad-Aware and Spybot, all kept fully updated.)

Heh. I think you're right (about not installing it). Mine is a
home-built system, from specific components (hardware and
software) selected, installed and configured by me. My system is
by no means 'average' (whatever that means ^_^ ) - I have a
goodly amount of fairly eccentric software (including some
utilities that are getting on a bit but which are still useful)
and I have no intention of 'hosing' my system by installing
something that - so far as I can see - doesn't offer anything I
need, let alone want.

Once I've decided that I no longer need the W98SE partition in my
dual-boot configuration I'll probably uses XXClone to make a
backup of the XP partition and then apply SP2 (which I have on an
official MS CD) to one instance and see what happens... (And yes,
I *will* perform the various steps that MS specify before
applying SP2 - I'm sometimes rash but I'm not I hope a complete
idiot... ^_- )
