I finally decided to install SP2. I have been having the
little icon on my task bar so I clicked on it ,a window
popped up and I clicked install. The window went to never
never land. So I went to windows update site. I sat while
3 hours went by . It got to 48.8MB then stopped. I have
the SP2 CD so I tried it. It stopped because XPSP2res.dll
was stopping it. I went to Safe Mode and removed it. Now
it stops System32\drivers\wstcodec.sys is running.I don't
know what to do now. I think that it may have something
to do with the little Microsoft Icon on the task bar. It
is there and you can get to do anything ,left click or
right. Please help.

Do a System Restore back to an earlier date.

Follow these instructions from some well known MVP's

I too had problems with installing SP2. I was using the disk. Could not
access internet. So I uninstalled it, disabled Zone Alarm, Norton Antivirus,
reinstalled cd and have had no problem since. I did reactivate the firewall
& Antivirus.

I forwarded to Microsoft installation of Service Pack 2 (
which I implemented on my own personal system) [ I
multiboot 98 Second Edition, 2000 Pro SP4, and XP SP2]
which follows in this manner:
Disconnect all external devices ( including printers,
usb ,and firewire devices)
Disable Sound card in device manager
Reset Display settings to defaults ( prior to
installation of device driver)
Disable all anti-virus, and security programs.
Install SP2 ( the reason for disabling sound card, and
resetting vid settings, is SP2.cab files contain updated
drivers for your current ones, and may conflict with
them, and cause corrupted or slow motion type graphics in
graphic apps or gaming applications).
Follow the above procedure, and you should have a clean
install.
