Installed SP2 today but had too my problems and had to
restore my system.

Windows messanger kept loading on startup even after I
dissabled the service. A new LAN icon appears in the tray
with an error message about incomplete network services
even though I'm not on a network. When I dissabled the LAN
service, my broadband connection dropped. I also did not
notice any perceptible performance improvements. I'll wait
for SP3 to sort out the bugs...

Messenger can easily be disabled or removed from your XP
install. As to the Network, it could be that XP added an icon
for Wireless or Firewire connection. Or possibly, it added the
Residential Gateway component to networking. The speed is
related to disk fragmentation that self-corrects within a few
days of use.
