I had posted in the Networking section, but didn't get any
help. As I said
in this post, I tried to disable the Windows Messanger
service but it didn't
work. It just kept starting up on boot.

Can you provide detailed instructions to disabling it
completely? And the
LAN issue, when I tried to dissable it, my broadband
connection dropped. I
had to re-enable the LAN connection to get back online.
How can I get
around this issue?

Thanks for your help.

>Messenger can easily be disabled or removed from your XP
install. As to the Network, it could be that XP added an
icon
for Wireless or Firewire connection. Or possibly, it added
the
Residential Gateway component to networking. The speed is
related to disk fragmentation that self-corrects within a
few
days of use.
Did you post for help or simply to relate your experiences
?

To "Uninstall" Messenger completely, cut and paste the line below
into your Start, Run box and press enter
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

As to the icon, it shows itself so you can visually see network
traffic. One "Little" monitor window represents Inbounds and
the other Outbound traffic. Just go to Control Panel, Network
Connections - Right Click on your Local Area Connection icon.
Take Properties. At the bottom of the details box will be two
check boxes. Uncheck both, if you don't wish to have the icon
present in the Notification Area (By the Time display). Apply,
OK...to close out the Windows.

Not sure on Messenger.

But your modem/router and computer is technically a LAN.

To disable the icon on the system tray go to right click the connection in
Network Connections in Control Panel and uncheck "show icon in notification
area".
