View Full Version : SP2 Killed My Home Network!

Hi Everybody,
If this has been covered already, I apologize for bring it up again.
After the SP2 install on two XP Pro machines, they no longer allow access to
one another. Each machine can "see" the other one and both still have
internet access, but I get an error message saying "Access Denied" when I
try to move or copy file's from one machine to the next.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Scot
PS
I ran the home networking wizard again after SP2 installed and it didn't fix
it.

Network is a big idea.
What parts make up your network?

Window XP Pro - are you still usung simple file sharing?
are you talking only about the "Sharded Documents" folder on each machine?
or are they new ones with speciall permisions defined under SP1?

Are you using the Guest account or NT Authorization?

Do you use a parallel router or a shred host or a NAt with a gateway?

Does your router have a fw and does it do dchp to all machines or just
clients?

I also had this. The problem is that Windows XP SP2 adds security to XP.
You will need to re-do the Networing Wizard and configure the XP Firewall so
as to enable file/print sharing.

Hi,
Both machines are connected to a router which connects to the cable modem.
File & Printer sharing turned on.
Worked perfectly before SP2 install.
Any idea's?

XP's Guest account must be enabled for file and printer sharing to work. An
easy test to run from a DOS window on XP is: net use \\[xp pc name]\[share
name] /user:guest ""
In my case it wasn't and activating Guest fixed it.

To add to the other advice, this happened to me. I have also see
several reports elsewhere of the same behaviour.

On investigation, it seemed that the on-board NIC (Asus) was somehow
acquiring an IP address that was not compatible with the LAN. It was
in the wrong range.

I dealt with the issue by installing a PCI NIC card. This is working
flawlessly.

No amount of fiddling around will get my on-board NIC to work.

Setting the IP address rather than leaving it to the router/modem DHCP
doesn't work.
