XP repair / repair install SP2

How does the XP CD with or without SP1 repair a system running SP2?

..... Repair install ...

Something does not add up. What is the big secert?
Does it really work or is it a myth?
Does it work 100% of the time (file wise?)

It seems that only a slipedstream SP2 CD would work.

What are the triggers in the repair? What is the repair keying off of to
restore a file?
Where do the files to be restored for SP2 come from?

Any updates not part of the CD will need to be reinstalled.
If the CD is Windows XP with no Service Pack, after a Repair
Installation, all Windows files will be replaced and no updates
currently installed regardless which updates or Service pack is
installed.
If the CD is SP-1, the computer will lose all post SP-1 updates and
SP-2.

It will revert back to the same as the CD used to repair install. All
updates and service packs will need to be reapplied. If you applied SP1 or 2
and your CD is older, you should consider creating a slipstream CD with the
correct service pack.

This is what I concluded but many op's are being told to do a repair or
repair install and not considering this effect.
(I wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one that could spin Gold out of
straw. ;) )

Is this also true for just a Repair or does the repair key off the Restore
point and the only time that would fail would be if the file was bad (bad
disk, bad sector) ?

The repair install has no interaction with restore points, they are removed
after a repair install. A repair install is an in-place upgrade.

Yes, I understand but I was asking about just a repair on that last part.
The repair only restores a set of system files, right?
Now I'm not sure, I thoht those files came from the DLL cach / cab, not the
CD.

Are you talking about System Restore? There is no Repair other than booting
from the CD and chooing to repair a current installation.

No, a restore point is just a backup in time.
A repair is what you said, boot from CD and do a repair.
Repair install is a slang term for Install over the exsisting windows from
the CD.

But where does the repair operation get the files used?
From the disk or from the CD?

And the big problem will occur when you do the repair install on a larger
than 137 GB partition. Pre SP1 will normally prevent usage of the drive
until SP1 or later is installed.

A slipstream of the Gold (original) version with the "currently installed"
service pack will alleviate that problem. I say currently installed as not
all people will upgrade to SP2 for some time to come.
