View Full Version : Q: Curious about XP's "future" activation...

I am curious as to what happens when XP becomes "unsupported"
with regards to activation.

Does that mean you can no longer get an (re)activation code from
Microsoft?

Does XP become a "dead" (planned obsolescence?) operating system
that does not allow for upgrading my ancient computer without
triggering the WPA?

Greetings --

When Microsoft introduced Product Activation two years ago, they
also announced that, should they ever cease supporting a product that
requires activation, they'd make available a "patch" to remove the
activation requirement.

Thanks for the quick responce Bruce. :-)

After reading the Microsoft Product Activation FAQ kindly provided by
Nicholas (http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/mpafaq.asp),
I'm somewhat satisfied, though the word "likely" inserted in the
pertinent paragrah gives me some misgivings.

Thanks for the quick answers and the link Nicolas, much appreciated.

After having read it cover to cover (g), I do note the word "likely"
in the paragraph dealing with the subject! Hmmmm...

Greetings --

It's "legalese." Who can honestly expect anyone, major
corporation or not, to accurately predict the future?

If and when that happen which should be many years in the future. (hopfully
but you never know with Mickey Mouse) there are ways to crack the activation
even now and with all the intelligent hackers around probably even more
common approaches will be advailable. I do not forsee any problem either
from Microsoft dropping activation or not being able to overcome dropped
support.
