View Full Version : HELP: SP2 firewall reminder won't stay switched off

Hi all
I have just installed SP2 on my Windows XP Pro. As I am running a
Sygate firewall I have disabled the default Windows firewall, but a
balloon keeps intermittently popping up on my System Tray when I
reboot reminding me that my system is a risk. I keep going to 'Change
the way Security Centre Alerts Me ' and unchecking the Alert Settings
'Firewall' box, but when I reboot it comes back as checked.
How on earth can I get Windows to remember the unchecked state so that
I don't keep getting the reminder on the System Tray?
Many thanks

Sometimes the setting doesn't stick. To avoid the message, disable the
security center service in Start | Run | services.msc

Thanks. It's a bit drastic but it appears to work. I will wait until
MS come up with a bug fix before I restart the service.
Thanks again

You're welcome. The security center really doesn't do anything other
than being a nag, which has it's place if the person doesn't pay
attention that the AV an firewall are working ok. Other than that it
provides no vital service.

I agree. Although the Security Center is touted as one of SP2's
big improvements, I personally find it useless and have it turned
off.
But I suppose you're right that it has its value for someone who
doesn't himself pay attention to these things.
