Disk Cleanup

Trying to uses Disk Cleanup from Accessories\Sysrem\Disk
Cleanup brings up the usual Cleanup screen but the action
stops before the program gets under way. Any suggections
(I use Windows XP Home Media Center)

You could try this to see if it helps...
Run Regedit and navigate to this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Volume Caches
Next open "compress old files" folder and delete all files within. Do not delete the folder itself.
Close Regedit and reboot your machine. Try running Disk Cleanup.
