I get a message indicating that my password will expire
in 14 days. Why? How can I prevent the neccessity to
change my password?

right click on My Computer go to Manage> Users and Groups> User.
Double click on the user you want to change. Mark password never expires.

Why? Because password expiration is a default setting in a fresh install of
XP. Either change your password on a regular basis or disable the setting.
To disable:
Right click My Computer and select Manage. Double click Users and Groups.
Click Users. In right panel, right click your account and select
Properties. Check the box next to "Password Never Expires"
