During my last reboot, the computer booted to a blank
desktop and then to a Welcome screen with my name on it.
Clicking on my name causes the computer to say "logged off"
In short I am stuck at this point, and can't get into an
active Windows session

Try a control-alt-delete. This should bring up a password screen. Click
cancel and you should be able to get into Windows. I suggest downloading
TweakUI for Xp,
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp, and setting
up automatic logon.

The only time that the default built in Administrator account is shown on
the Welcome screen is when there are no other user accounts present. Add a
new account and it becomes "hidden." The reason for hiding is that this
account is intended as a "spare" that can be used when troubleshooting.
The account can still be accessed by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice at the
welcome screen. When the classic style logon prompt appears, type in the
username (Administrator) and password.
You have some other possible choices as well:
TweakUI for XP can be used to have that account appear on the welcome
screen again. TweakUI is one of the Power toys (for XP with SP1 only):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
If you do not have SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
Or you could create a new account. Then copy the information from the old
account to the new one. Use the new account, which will display on the
Welcome screen without TweakUI and continue to reserve that original
Administrator account for troubleshooting.
