I want to install XP on a clean hard disk. But I can't
format my C drive because there are "Windows Programs
Running on the drive". I have turned off the virus
checking programs but still get the message. How do I
proceed?

You start your computer and press the appropriate key to
open the BIOS (often it is the F1, F2, F10 or Esc key).
In the BIOS set the boot order to boot from the CDROM
Exit the BIOS saving changes
The computer will boot from the C: drive.
Open the CD and place the XP CD in the drive.
Restart the computer and it will boot from the CD, which
will allow you to use the menu options in the install
program to change the partitions and format, then do a clean
install.

Greetings --
Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Boot to the XP CD. IFormatting the drive is an options during the
install process.
You can't format a drive in use.
