SP2 is a solid, secure release. It is a major "Critical Update"
for Windows XP and updates over 5 million lines of code,
enabling much stronger security, stability, and affords a tad better
performance benefit. SP2 was extensively tested on hundreds of
thousands of various computer configurations over a period of
many, many months. I would encourage you to install it at your
earliest convenience.

Laney,
In addition to Carey's answer -- Note : that if you are basing your
impression of SP2 on what you see in these newsgroups then remember that
this is a peer to peer support newsgroup where people only come with
problems; and as some other poster said it is like sitting in the
ER/Casualty department of a busy hospital, if all you see are injuries and
illness do you assume the entire population is ill or injured (?)
There are millions of users out there who have deployed and are using SP2
without any issues at all.

It's a little tiresome seeing that lame analogy being
tossed around as though it made sense. Can one assume
that the injured and ill within sight in the hospital
comprise *all* of the ill and injured people in the
world? Is it possible to make any inferences about the
population at large by looking at a sample group (e.g.,
hospitalized individuals, or people in these groups with
SP2 problems)? Isn't it true that most people with SP2
problems will never come here, and that many don't even
know that Usenet exists?

I'm sorry. I'll let you proof read and edit the next one I come up with.

Quite possible. An absence of posts about a problem here doesn't mean that
the problem does not exist, for the reasons you state.
However, this is a treatment site for people with Windows problems, so its
safe to assume that the statistical sample of people with computer problems
in here is higher than it would be in the general population of computer
users. Which is the point of the analogy. You can't base numbers for the
general computer population based on the sample population of this group
because the sample is skewed.
Would you think a survey to find the percentage of alcoholics in your town
was a valid survey if it turned out that the survey was carried out in an
alcoholics anonymous meeting? Or at a Mosque?

Yes, ignore all of the posts about machines that have
crashed, and windows installations that were screwed up.
They are really Apple employees just trying to make MS
look bad.
There's a maxim that applies;
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thats your rendition i've used it security is still the same you get the
same viruses and malware at exactly the same rate as before. The only thing
that helps is using ie ads or using mozilla firefox. Gates is crazy the
internet explorer with sp2 is just as bad as the original release back in
2001.

You say, "Don't come to any conclusions about the numbers
of SP2 problems based on what you see in this group,
because people with problems are more likely to be here
than people without problems." I think that's fairly
obvious. But the whole problem is that A) only a very
small percentage of users with problems are likely to
show up here, and B) people who are not smart or
resourceful enough to come here are the very ones who are
most likely to have problems. It serves no purpose to tell
people not to pay close attention to the problems reported
here; in fact it's irresponsible.
Your own analogy also makes no sense, by the way; as the
number of alcoholics has a tendency to remain constant
when viewed as a proportion of the population at large,
the numbers of people attending AA meetings are indeed
reliable indicators of the extent of the problem in a
given population. Of course no one would try to
extrapolate anything from a survey whose samples were
taken exclusively from an Islamic population, unless one
were attempting to determine the number of Islamic
alcoholics. And the concept extends to XP users with
SP2 problems, another fairly exclusive population.
And why did you capitalize "mosque"?

Oh I think its a very good idea to look here at the types of errors people
are encountering. I think that newsgroups like this are very good places to
see early signs of a problem precisely because the people who tend to use
newsgroups like these tend to be ahead of the wave.
What you can't say is that because an error is reported here, it MUST be
happening everywhere, or because an error is not reported here then it CAN'T
be happening at all.

Yes, but I was talking about using the numbers of people attending AA
meetings, for example, being used as a representative sample of a cross
section of the whole population, where obviously to use the numbers in that
way would be a skew.
You know, any analogy will tend to look weaker when subjected to close
examination, its supposed to be a simple parable to explain a point, not a
scientific catalogue of a theory.
> And why did you capitalize "mosque"?
No reason, other than I always tend to capitalise religious building names -
I'd have written "Church" just as happily if I was talking about a place of
Christian worship.
