Another SP2 install problem - lsass.exe

After downloading xp sp2 from microsoft's site and
installing on laptop, machine will no longer boot. When
windows tries to start, I get lsass.exe - system error,
object name not found. After clicking on OK, the system
reboots only to do the same thing in an endless loop.
Trying to reboot from a disk and/or in safe mode with cmd
prompt also does not work. I am totally stuck now with no
knowledge on what to do next. Please help.

have you tried typing start windows at the dos prompt in safe mode, i had a
similar problem but it was not sp2 related and thats the only way i got in
then i used system restore.
