How do I recreate the desktop button next to start on the
taskbar please?

Just drag it to Quick Launch from the Start Menu using the right button.

Hi Susan,
Copy/paste the below into notepad, click file/"save as" and call it "show
desktop.scf", save to the desktop. Drag it from there to the quicklaunch
bar:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=EXPLORER.EXE,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Susan,
Copy and paste the five lines below into Notepad.
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Then save it as Show Desktop.scf and drag it to your quick launch bar.
