My machine will no longer restore from a previous restore
point. I have gone Microsoft and downloaded all of the
necessary downloads, and now I can't restore from an
earlier date. Any suggestions?

This usually means the System Restore data store is corrupted and is usually
resolved as follows. Note, this will erase all previous restore points but
you cannot access them anyway. Go to System in Control Panel, go to the
System Restore tab, place a check in "Turn off System Restore," click apply
and ok, reboot the system, now go to the same tab, remove the check click
apply and ok to turn System Restore on. Then, test to see if you are able
to run System Restore.

Michael - I used your suggestions for Dale Kukulka's
problems with system restore to reslove mine (posted 6/26
and 6/27) and it worked perfectly. Any suggestion about
what percentage of your hard drive to dedicate to system
restore? Anyway, thanks.

You're welcome, Terry.
This is a subject on which everyone has an opinion. If you have a large
hard drive and are not cramped for space, there's no reason not to leave it
at the default settings. Many consider that a waste but System Restore
works on the following basis, first in first out. Hence, as you run out of
space, older restore points are removed to make room for new ones. Also
understand, if you do a lot of application installs at once, the System
Restore data store is going to explode in size wiping out old restore points
anyway.
That said, if SR is set too small you may find yourself wondering why you
have so few restore points saved and that can certainly happen when you've
done a lot of installs as mentioned above.
I can only pass this information along, there is no optimum, it's question
of what you require and what you are doing.
