View Full Version : application moving

I have reviewed my xp pro disk including the
\support\tools directory and I cannot find an application
mover, I have also ran search's with several different de-
limiter's but I have had no luck. Before I go out and
refer to a resource manual, is their a mover included? I
would like to move an application (Adobe Photoshop 7.0)
and all it's associated files from my drive 0 (C:), to
one of my physicial secondary drives. I can't see going
out and purchasing a vendor's program for application
moving, if XP is all that it is "touted" to be. Thanks

Wouldn't it be easier and less trouble to delete the program
on C: and reinstall from your CD to the desired drive? If
you don't install the application, the registry (which is on
C:) will still be pointing to C:. You can simply copy/paste
data files to the new location.
You even leave PhotoShop or any other program where it is
and move the data files.

Application moving is not an easy task to undertake. Easier to uninstall and
install again to another drive.
There are programs available to do it, but it involves knowledge about the
program to move, what registry entries to change, what to change in possible
*.ini files etc....

There is really no such thing as "application mover". Where did you
hear of such a thing? Suggest you go back to that source of info to get
more advice.
To make ADobe Photoshop 7.0 work on your new machine, simply dig out
your CD install disk of this product and install it.
Sounds like you already have your Adobe files on drive "0 (c:)", so your
problem should be solved in a snap.

Check with any software vendor catalog, I see dozens of
them available, the page I'm on now has one included when
I purchase "CleanSweep"

The whole idea was to avoid the uninstall/reinstall option
with the orphan registry issue that always seems to tag=20
along with it, along with the abandoned shortcuts with=20
shared files that uninstall never takes care of.

Tried that in the past. The whole idea was to avoid the
uninstall/reinstall option and the orphan registry
entries, along with the abandoned shortcuts and the
shared file problems that come with it. Just seems that
if XP is so hot that MS would have worked the moving
situation out!

Hi,
Uninstalling/reinstalling generally *prevents* the orphan registry entries,
as they are either removed, or are overwritten with newer information during
the reinstall. Part of your uninstall routine should *always* be to search
for and delete dead shortcuts and program folders.
I've never seen nor heard of any interest from MS in developing an
application mover. It would be a nightmare if someone tried doing this with
program installed in a network, the logistics alone would be unfathomable.
These utilites are best suited to home users, so would have limited market
value. Only a small percentage of home users will ever have a need to
transfer program folders.

Greetings --
The "mover," or all of one that is necessary, is on the original
installation media of the application. It's normally called
Setup.exe. All you need do is perform a custom installation, and
specify the target drive/directory.

Greetings --
Microsoft put a lot of effort into making WinXP as user-friendly
as possible, but it's simply not possible for them to anticipate
everything that users might someday need/want. And, quite frankly,
for them to include an "application moving utility" would be, to my
way of thinking, the equivalent of their saying that we're too stupid
to plan our own software installations, or too irresponsible to accept
the consequences of our own bad decisions. This OS already has far
too many "hand-holding" features for my taste.
