Recently I got an automatic update XP SP2. Several days later when
shutting down, I got a message "Do not power off your computer Windows
is installing updates 1 of three, it will shut down automatically." In
the morning the blue screen with that message waqas still up the
computer did not shut down. Today it did the same thing again. It says
not to shut down or power off as Windows is installing update 1 of 3
updates. It never shutd down !
Anyone have a clue as to what is going on here? I did norton virus scan
there is none.

Is NAV running during the install attempts? Disable it, please.

Not sure what you mean, do you mean Netscape Navigator? I would say no.
I run Mozilla, but it was not running when SP2 was installed, and all
programs were down when this attempted install stalls.
What happened is when I started up one day I got the auto notice that my
system needed an update . No browser was running. SP2 downloaded and
installed itself. All was ok for a week or so.
Then all of a sudden when all programs were shutdown and I tried to
shutdown the computer I get this message
.....not sure it has anything to do with SP2 but some new patches to it??

NAV = Norton AntiVirus

maybe auto updates is too hard.
try turning off auto updates and do it manually.
it's interesting to see what gets downloaded, that you
don't want (other than critical updates)

I had the EXACT thing happen to me last night. I saw one other post that
also had this problem - but so far, none of the responses have helped me. I
have tried to shut down and the same thing happens and the computer freezes
on the update 1 of 3. I would sure like to find out what is going on! Any
help anyone can give would be wonderful.

I've found a little bit of a work around. Restart the computer and tap
F8 until you get the advanced startup menu then select last known good
configuration. This will allow you to log back in and disable
automatic updates and run the manual updates. Oh, and it probably is
ad-ware that's causing it b/c every system I've seen this on had Kazaa
or something on it and I see a LOT of systems a day. Up till yesterday
I worked for Gateway's tech support at an outsource company. I'll try
to check back in and see if there's anything else I can help with.
