View Full Version : V2i protector service won't start after SP2

After installing SP2 on XP Professional my Drive Image 7 will no longer work.
It give "Remote procedure call failed". Troubleshooting shows that the
service "V2i Protector" is no longer loading. I am also unable to start it
manually.

Windows firewall is set to "off". I have tried reinstalling the application
several times. Norton AV 2005 is also installed, have tried
uninstalling/reinstalling it as well.

Windows is updated with all current hotfixes.

Thanks for any help!

I just did an update from
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/dimage/index.html for the Drive Image
7. Don't know if this will help or now.

Thanks but I've had that update for a long time. There won't be any more of
course as Symantec now wants us all to buy Ghost :(

Yeah, I saw how old that was but I didn't have it, lol. I figured that was
the last of the updates which was last March of 04. I really like the Drive
Image.

Isn't it like Symantec to buy the compitition and then stop providing their
product!
The problem with Drive image 7 and service pack2 is
"gearsec.exe" that is the burning file that Drive image7 uses to copy your
drive.
As of now I don't know of an update to gearsec.exe.
Sorry I coudn't be of any more help, maybe the writers of gearsec will
provide an update in the future that will work with all products that use it?

Unfortunately yes, it is their favorite, maybe only, way of beating the
competition.

Regarding the gearsec.exe, that may be a problem but at this point it can't
even read the drives, much less copy them. I'm almost 100% certain that the
V2i Protector service not running is my problem. not to say the gearsec
problem won't become apparent if this one is ever fixed.

Hmm, SP2 did not affect Drive Image 7 on my system in any way.

Do you have the latest .net framework service pack and update?

I guess if you can't get it started even manually, you might try just
reinstalling the program.

I believe I have the latest .net but will recheck, it was certainly working
before SP2 as I did a backup prior to installing SP2.

Already tried reinstalling several times.

After troubleshooting most of the night I now know that its not SP2, its the
hotfix to SP2, the latest "cumulative security update". Unfortunately
removing that update does not fix the problem, nor does removing SP2. Some
setting was changed and not put back correctly.

Tonight I'll try reinstalling SP2.

Did you get it fixed? Yesterday, all of sudden I could not open Drive Image
(due to security reasons)?? So I downloaded the trial version of True Image
and low and behold, this morning I could open Drive Image??!! Everything
seems to be working now.
