SP2 Issue?

I installed the SP2 when it came out. First problem was I lost my ability to
get online with my cable modem. Outlook could not access my mail account and
a few other problems. I immediately uninstalled SP2, but am continually
finding issues with programs as I access them. In fact, most of the issues
seem to be related to firewall issues, which never existed prior to SP2. For
example, I am not able to upgrade NIS to 2005. All the error prompts
indicate a firewall problem. Also, can not boot a game due to "Abnormal
Program Termination" due to problems with Internet access. Very frustrated
because the problems are small and virtually invisible until they pop up. If
I bought XP Pro and installed over my XP home would it completely refresh the
windows XP operating environment, and hopefully fix whatever the SP2 screwed
up?

Sys: 3 GHZ, 1Gig Ram, Radeon 9800 Pro, 250 GB HD Raid Striped, all updates,
drivers, etc, with exception of SP2 for XP.

No upgrading to xp pro over an xp home install with problems is a bad idea
and may cause more probs. For NIS see there website for fixes and patches.
For your internet, try rebooting the whole system. Turn computer off, turn
router off(if you have one), turn cable modem off(unplug). Wait a few
minutes. Then plug in the cable modem and wait for it to sync(cable light is
solid). Then turn on router, then turn on computer. Once logged in, try
internet. If no go, what ip address are you getting? Is your nic installed
properly and working in device manager?

How about a fresh reinstall of the XP home program then? I do have Internet
access since I uninstalled SP2 and I don't plan on reinstalling it at all.
Too many issues. I just want my reliable machine that existed prior to SP2
returned to me. For security I just went back to my original NIS 03 version.
The problems I'm experiencing are just the ones I've run across....no idea
how significant or far-reaching it may be. For example, haven't used Nero in
a while to burn a DVD. After SP2 Nero just sits there and won't burn the
disc....just stops. How many other issues I've got, I haven't got a clue.

It seemed at first that the Windows environment was making the PC world a
much better place. Man how I hated the old systems where everything required
tweeking and manipulating DOS to make it work. Seems like we're going
backwards now instead of forwards.?????? Simple upgrades should not require
complete upgrades to everything in and on the machine. Sorry for
ranting...just very frustrated.

A format and clean install should help, yes. (but it's usually a last
resort)

Bad idea.

Whether you knew it or not, your computer did have problems before you tried
sp2. If it didn't you wouldn't have seen so many probs. That's not opinion,
that's a real fact. A clean install will fix your os and sp2 should work
like a charm then. Just remeber, not all computers are created equal. Some
are just plain old junk, no matter how new they are.

Windows has always used "tweaking". If you haven't been tweaking it, then
your not using it right. Those tweaks exist for a reason.

Ahh........ I have to differ with your view. Computers are in their infancy.
Things will change and change again, and change again. You will have to get
new hardware, new software, new computers as the technology progresses. This
is just the way it is. Computers users must deal with that reality or don't
use the computer. As with almost all technology, as it evolves we have to
change and the products we use have to change in order to keep going
forward. You can't take a new 350 engine with 500 horsepower and all the
bells and whistles and put it in a Model-T Ford and expect it to work
without major tweaking. As car technology evolved, cars changed and the way
we used them changed as well. Same with computers, as the technology evolves
your machine and it's users must evolve as well or be left behind.
