Recovering files-HELP!!!!

I have window xp as my operating system. This morning
when I woke up and booted up the computer, I found that
ALL my folders and files that were saved on the desktop
were GONE!!! I swear they were there last night when I
shut down the computer... Can anyone tell me what
happened and how to restore those files? Thanks a lot!

Sandra, check the following.

Right click the desktop >> Properties >> Desktop >> Customize Desktop Is
Cleanup wizard checked? Do you have an Unused Desktop folder? Search
in the Help for the documentation on this.

Just did and the "Cleanup wizard" was checked (unless you
want me to run it?) It was set for 60 days. I couldn't
find the "Unused Desktop folder" using the search
function.
