In my control panel, change remove programs I have found
a whole list of
WINDOWS XP HOTFIX (SP1) [SEE Q 311889] FOR MORE
INFORMATION
In all of the listings everything is the same except the
numbers, there are no duplicated numbers in the list.
What in the world is this? Can anyone help me?
What I was trying to do was to delete any programs that I
was no longer using.

Because there are so many windows fixes avaliable from the windows update
site, microsoft simply numbers them. The same happens with the knowledge
base articles.
If you asked me to help you with a problem, i can say to install update
number xxx instead of typing out its name. I could also tell you to go to
http://support.microsoft.com and look at question / article 311889.
By visiting that article, i can tell you that the hotfix installed fixes a
problem with the remote assistance feature of windows xp. Just type the
question number eg. 311889 into the knowledge base search field at
support.microsoft.com and it will return the article.

Some of the updates (or "hotfixes") from Windows Update include an
uninstall option. The old files that were replaced by the hotfix are
tucked into the folders you are referring to. The name of the update is
added to Add/Remove Programs. When/if you decide to uninstall an update
via Add/Remove Programs, those older versions of files will be restored
as working files.

Those are the patches you installed from the Windows Update site.
