So are all these Windows 95/98 programs that i have
garbage now that i've installed XP?? The version of direct
X that they require can only run on W95/98. Is there a way
to make them work on the new windows? Please help!

Almost all programs will work with windows xp. Check start > help and
support for more information about compatibility modes and apply them to the
game exe's. This will make the program think its running on windows 95 or
98/me.
Some games however will still not work if they are more complex and dos
based.
Direct X 9 can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com/directx Direct X is also
backward compatible so if a game requires direct x 7, it will usually run
better with direct x 9 installed because of the technological advancments
since direct x 7 was released.
