Windows Update with SP2

[The Old Timer]

I went to install SP2 today from a CD & it suggested that I run Windows
Update software first. This went OK & said that I shouldn't have any
problems. The install appears to have gone OK. The first time that I have
connected to the web since the install it suggests that there are more
updates available so I just let it go ahead. I have a very slow connection
only 28KPS & this took about 40 minutes. The window tells me that there are
2 updates the larger of which is 2.8MB. I tell it to go ahead & it just
appears to have installed what I had just downloaded. Is this normal?
Before when the PC was scanned for updates it told me what updates were
available & if I wished them I then downloaded them. This current situation
appears to be backwards since if I get to see whets on offer it's already
been downloaded. This is crazy especially with a very slow connection.

There are 2 options on windows update site now - Express install - that just
takes a best guess and installs the most important. Custom install behaves
much like the original and gives you the ability to view before you
download.

You may want to check your automatic update settings either in Control Panel
or at the Windows Update site. One of the settings is to download the
update but not install until you approve the installation. What you
describe appears to be this setting.

If the above is the case, and with your slow connection, you may prefer the
setting that just notifies you of an update. I have mine set to automatic
download and install at a time when my computer is normally turned off.
What happens is that when there is an important update, the update does not
download and install. Instead I get a warning notice when I shutdown
Windows that an update is pending. I prefer not to let Windows have full
control of installing updates so that I can image my system before a large
update is installed.
