I have an emachine T2240 with XP Home and Sprint DSL on
it. If I leave my machine running while I am away for a
few hours it is quite often extremely sluggish when I try
to use it again. I also have a good deal of trouble with
freeze ups. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix
this? I am at a loss for anything other than shooting
the thing. Your help will be greatly appreciated as I am
not a very knowledgable person when it comes to computers.

Dont shoot the computer. I can tell you that giving an old, old cd-writer a
kick sometimes helps but shooting it will probably drain what little
processing power it has left and rendering it unusable.

I suggest running a scan for spyware. www.lavasoft.de has a popular scanner
called ad-aware. It will scan each file and if it finds it to be a program
classed as spyware or a similar security threat, it will move it to a
'vault'. Works like a virus scanner but more primitive in features. (also
its free :) )

Next run a proper virus scan. Some sites are able to scan your computer for
free but if you have virus software, use that instead and make sure it has
the latest updates installed.
