Check here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm and look at "How to
Format"
If you wish to repartition first then check "How To Partition" (Make certain
you read the information on How To Access The Recovery Console)
If you are planning to reinstall XP then you can format during the
installation process. Information on doing a clean install is found here

Boot from the XP CD, and select the install option...the
tools to partition and format are there.

Hi, Ged.
It depends on which drive you want to format.
If you are starting from scratch - or from a drive whose data has been
backed up or is expendable - then, as the others have said, just boot from
the WinXP CD-ROM and let it repartition and reformat your HD for you before
it runs Setup to install WinXP.
If you want to format a second HD (or any volume other than the System
Partition or Boot Volume) then use Disk Management (type at the Run prompt:
diskmgmt.msc).
