I have recently installed Win XP SP2, my OE is 2004 version
6.0000-2900-2180. I have also one hotmail account. When I create the account
and then try to retrieve the folders from the server or check my inbox, the
"server log in" window appears. It has my e-mail address and password in it
and the "Remember Password" check box is grayed out. I click "OK" but the
same window appears tens of times. I can never sign in with OE. However, I
can use the Messenger to sign in and also I can do it with in the Hotmail
website.
I HAVE ALSO tried deleting the :
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider]
according to what was said in
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_oe_passwords.htm , but I have the same
problem again.
PS: I have the same problem with Outlook 2003....it also prompts for my
e-mail address and password.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You might have too tight security settings on your internet zone. For
example disabled cookies can cause problems. Put hotmail to trusted security
zone and see if it works. If it works, you have to loosen internet zone
settings somewhat.

Hi,
I think that you may have fallen victim to a recent change in Hotmail.
See this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=878462
Support for Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) the interface used by
OE to access Hotmail, is being dropped to make it more difficult to send
spam through Hotmail.
Hope this helps,
Don

The problem occurred after upgrading my XP to SP2.... Before that, something
like 25 days ago, I had no trouble using OE for accessing my Hotmail
account. Now, just can't sign in and if that is true ( that Hotmail needs
me - a 3 years user of it - to upgrade my account by paying them money ),
then Outlook Express does not worth a penny at all.... Microsoft gotto clean
it from all its windows....
Thanks guys....

Make certain your time, date, and /time zone/ settings are correct.
IE Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Sites> type in
hotmail.com
(msn.com)
(passport.net)
and Allow All Cookies for each domain.
How to Manage Cookies (IE6)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283185
Troubleshooting Secure Sites in WinXP SP2
(Hotmail and .NET Passport should be treated as Secure Sites)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870700
Temporarily disable your firewall, any "system" tools (NSW, NIS, anything by
Norton or McAfee) and pop-up/ad blockers to see if they're interfering.
IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>HTTP 1.1>toggle on/off; "Use HTTP 1.1
through proxy connections" must *not* be checked.
IE Tools>Internet Options>Security>[zone in OE runs; should be Restricted
Sites]>Custom Level>User Authentication>Logon>toggle between the setting
choices here ['Prompt for Username and Password' and 'Automatic...current
Username...' works for me.]
Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to the defaults might help, too.
If you're running a version of MSN Messenger earlier than v6.2.0137, try
upgrading to this latest version.
