View Full Version : Is the Upgrade Product Key differernt than the standard key

I am getting very frustrated. I mistakenly accepted the automatic update for
sp2, which failed with a winsrv not found error on reboot. I tried using
recovery console, but it would not recognize my password because the laptop
was syspreped at the factory.

I tried doing a repair using the sp1 version from my MSDN DVD... but when it
reached the point where it asked for the key, it keeps telling me it is
invalid... even though it was the one provided by my msdn subscription.

I tried using the key from my original XP disk, however it says that key is
invalid as well..

This is maddening. Is the Windows XP Professional Upgrade key different than
a standard XP key?

retail keys work with Retail copy of XP. (upgrade\full)

volume licence keys work with VL XP CD's.

oem keys work with OEM XP cd's.

evaluation pk's work with evaluation copies of XP.

from my experience you cannot mix and match product keys with the different
types of licences.

the winsrv error most likely means yopu had a spyware program instlled on
the system (TV MEDIA).

Your computer manufacturer's OEM Product Key cannot be used
with a MSDN DVD. You'll have to contact your computer manufacturer
and request a recovery or reinstallation CD.

Also, a Windows XP Professional Upgrade Product Key cannot be
used with a MSDN DVD.

You receive a "Stop: c0000135" and "winsrv was not found"
error message after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2

This happens quite often when a system is shipped with a pre-installed
copy of XP. The pre-installed copy is made from an image that is used
at the factory and as such, the product key will be different than the
one on the label of your machine. Try extracting the original product
key that was used by the factory: Use the "magic jellybean key
finder utility" or the "Everest Home Edition System Info Utility".
Both are free.

When you extract the key, use it instead.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for
any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and
vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full
version CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to
install a retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with
an English CD. No retail Product Key will work with a Volume Licensed
installation, and vice versa. Bottom line: Product Keys and CDs
cannot be mixed & matched. You have to have the specific type of
installation CD for which that license and Product Key was designed.
