Damndest thing.. i THINK it started after SP2 of XP but cant
honestly say problem wasnt there 2 weeks before. Problem wasnt
there 1 month before though. (last time I played an MP3 pre-sp2).

Basically, when I click on an MP3 file, I get about 1 second
of audio, then nada. Same behavior with winamp and MS-media
player. The MP3s are OK..Ive burnt them to cd and play them
on another PC without issue.

When I use winamp, the process dies. I can close winamp but its
still active in task manager..

WTF? Any ideas folks?

Open winamp and toggle the output plugin from directx to waveout.
Does the problem occur in both situations?

This wound up being a compatibility issue with XP .. my soundblaster 16
value
wasn't XP compatible, and the problem only manifested after SP2..
New soundcard and no problem.
