When I start my PC, (I use XP), programs I very seldom use, load
automatically. How can I prevent this?

You can control most of this in the program itself. Usually there will be a
"preferences" menu or "Options". Look for "Load at Windows Startup" or
something similar.
You can also use the Msconfig utility:
Start/Run. Enter msconfig, OK. Look under the startup tab,uncheck the
entries you don't want. (This process is usually reversible).
Check your startup folder also. Usually C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. Delete the shortcuts here.
Some very stubborn programs, like Real Player, may only be controlled from
the program menu.

Hit Start/Run. Type msconfig. In the system configuration utility General
tab check the Selective Startup button. Then go to the Startup tab and
uncheck all the boxes of programs you don't want to start at start-up.
