View Full Version : Windows XP Home OEM

I recently acquired a PC with windows XP Home OEM addition previously
installed from my Father's house (who has gone into a home due to altzheimers
(sp??)) and proposed to give it to my daughter who has just started secondary
school. Upon booting it up, when it got to the page with 'Windows XP' and the
scrolling 'loading' bar, the computer spontaneously reboots. This happens
every time I do it. I have tried starting my computer in safe mode but
without any luck. My final answer to solving the problem was to format the
computer and load Windows XP back onto it but I cannot find the CD anywhere
in the house and my father is not proving to be any help in the relocating of
the CD.

Does anybody know where I can get an OEM windows XP cd from as the computer
has a full licence adhered on the side of the chassis but no CD.

I trust somebody will know the answer to this question.

Thanks.

Ben,

My guess is that your computer in question has some form of a "Quick
Restore" or "System Restore" CD(s) which would restore the system to factory
condition in which you are unable to locate. It is possible to call the
manufacture of that computer and request a replacement set of "System
Restore" CD(s) at no charge if the system is still under warranty. They may
even send you a set even if the warranty has expired. Try giving your
computer company a call or email to their product technical support and
request a CD set.

I don't know who the manufacturer is, that's my problem.

I do remember when my father got the computer, he got an official Microsoft
OEM CD (with all of the holograms e.t.c. on it) so I think I will need
something similar to re-load windows

OK...An original OEM CDROM was used. Find a buddy that has XP and have him
create a WIn XP floppy boot disk to get you into into safe mode and check
things out with the system it would sure save you having to buy another OEM
CDROM. I hope you can find the original OEM CD.

I have an internet ready acer laptop so might be able to do it myself.

Spontaneous reboot can be caused by hardware problems as well as software.
So ensure that everything is properly connected. If you know you way around
the inside of a system try pulling the cover and reseat the RAM by removing
each stick and then pressing it back into their slots. Ensure that all fans
are connected and running. Ensure that all power supply connections are
firmly in place.

Try booting to the Boot menu and instead of selecting Safe Mode select Last
Known Good Configuration. That might get you in.

Check with the manufacturer of the system. They are responsible for OEM
versions of XP. They might be able to replace an OEM disc for a very nominal
fee.

Generally any OEM version of XP Home will work with the Product Key you
have. It is not pirating to use someone else's CD to install with providing
you don't use their Product Key so see if a friend can lend you their CD.

You should be able to get one from the makers of the machine: it will
have to be their variant in order to match up to that license key

As I said before, I'm not sure who made the PC, it's a blank casing with no
custom parts inside. I have replaced the ram and got a new video card as the
fan stopped working on the old one.

I have now started getting a 1/2 second blue screen just before it reboots.
Will this tell me the cause of the problem? How can I make the screen appear
for longer? Should I format the computer? where can I get a replacement OEM
CD without using the manufacturer?

Thanks.

Hi Ben you can get a replacement OEM version of XP from most stores that
sell computer components as well as from online stores such as
www.pricewatch.com. Often OEM versions are sold in combination with a piece
of hardware.
