Kia ora, Every time I try to play a cd rom this message appears
'16 bit windows subsystem
C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/AUTOEXEC.NT
The system files is not suitable for running MSDOS & Microsoft windows
applications..'

I am unable to burn to cd either.

When I turn the computer on, the 1st message I get is
'Error loading C:Program files/Wildtangent/Apps/CDA/cdaEngine0400.dll'
Was wondering if system restore would fix all these problems? I don't want
to lose my music. Cheers.

1. For the first issue (and the two could be related):

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=324767

Also can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and
creating registry entries for that file.
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=5f6f139.0409140618.749324fe%40posting. google.com

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=8PCdnSzBqtmadsPcRVn-gQ%40comcast.com

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.

2. For the second issue wildtangent can be a problem app. One option
is to google for it for ways to remove it. Or you can go to Start |
Run. Type in msconfig, hit ok. On the startup tab look for an entry
for this cdaengine0400.dll and uncheck the reference to it. Click ok,
reboot, and on the dialog that shows up on reboot check the box for it
not to "nag" you again.

Also do a thorough scan of your system for malware. Run these programs
to check for spyware/malware. After installing update them, then boot
into safe mode and run them. You should update and run them weekly.

Cwshredder

Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner

Pest Patrol Free Pest Scanner

For viruses, start with Trend Micro’s Sysclean. Download it and the
signature file. Turn off system restore, boot into safe mode and run
sysclean. Boot back into normal mode and run a full AV scan with your
normal AV program. Then turn system restore back on.

Trend Micro Sysclean

Trend Micro Signature File

You should also regularly run at least two of these online scans in
addition to your regular up to date AV program:

Online and Downloadable Virus Scanning:

Panda ActiveScan

Bit Defender Online Virus Scan:

After your system is clean use these programs to help keep it clean:

Wild Tangent was a nasty parasite that has been removed leaving traces
of what was trying to run it. Consult a forum on such things: Parasites
- Adware, Spyware & Other Scumware:
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=28
and maybe other forums on that site

As to the first point, copy the backup of autoexec.nt from
Windows\repair into windows\system32

On the CD: Are you trying to burn with the inbuilt burning, or some
third party package? And what happens when you try?

Hi
When I try to run any older programs my systen gives the same message. It
used to be ok. Not an expert but I figure for some reason the system hs lost
the facility for 16 bit functions. Any answeres to how to get that back ?

Start/run cmd, then run:

copy /y C:\Windows\repair\autoexec.nt C:\Windows\system32

AUTOEXEC.NT Fix Method 1:
copy; c:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt
to
c:\windows\system32

AUTOEXEC.NT FIX Method 2:
Go to; Start --> Run
enter; cmd.exe

{ assuming the WinXP CDROM disk is in drive "D:" }
In the Command Prompt enter...
expand D:\i386\autoexec.nt_ %windir%\system32\autoexec.nt

Since there are many forms of malware that will cause this kind of problem with AUTOEXEC.NT,
please perform the following...

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)
Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Internet Options --> Delete Files

Dump the contents of the Mozilla FireFox Cache { if you use FireFox }
Tools --> Options --> Privacy --> Cache --> Clear

1) Download the TrendMicro Sysclean Front End

Download the utility SYSCLEAN_FE at the following URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm
SYSCLEAN_FE automates the download and execution process of the Trend Sysclean Package.
Direct URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Sysclean_FE.exe

2) Execute; SYSCLEAN_FE.EXE
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; c:\sysclean\SYSCLEAN_FE.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'SYSCLEAN_FE Link' in c:\sysclean }
when you get to the menu dhoose [1] so you can boot into Safe Mode.

3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm

4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible.

5) Execute; c:\sysclean\SYSCLEAN_FE.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'SYSCLEAN_FE Link' in c:\sysclean }
Choose [2] on the menu and let SYCLEAN.COM scan your computer.

6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
Execute; c:\sysclean\SYSCLEAN_FE.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'SYSCLEAN_FE Link' in c:\sysclean }
Choose [2] on the menu and let SYCLEAN.COM scan your computer.

7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),

8) Reboot your PC.

9) Create a new Restore point

* * * Please report back your results * * *
