Recently I bought a used laptop. After three months of fighting to get
online, without success (either via modem or cable modem) I was told that I'd
have to completely slag the hard drive because the problem was being caused
by winsock errors. I did that, and now I can access the web via modem.
However, I still can't log in through cable modem.
No one can figure out why, but my IP address is set to a 169. value. This
is totally different from what our other computers on the same firewall use.
We looked through the registry, and found this invalid IP address in dozens
of entries. How can I get rid of this, and reset my computer so that it will
automatically find the right address? Deleting and reinstalling the TCP/IP
didn't work, and neither does repairing the LAN connection.
Many thanks, in advance, to anyone who can help me fix this!
