View Full Version : Changing WinXP partition size?

Hello,

I have WinXP running on a 5gig partition on a 20 gig drive and am running
out of space. The only thing on the drive is WinXP and OfficeXP but I only
have 200 mb free.

I want to increase the WinXP partition to 10 gigs and reduce the size of the
second logical partition from 15 to 10 gigs but I don't want to loose the
data on the second partition.

Is it possible to do this with the WinXP partition manager or do you need
Partition Magic to do something like that?

Thanks,

Bob

You can do that easily, with a aftermarket product called Partition Magic.
Make sure you use version 8, or above, to be compatible with XP.

Hi,

You don`t need to install the Partition Magic program to resize the
partition. Just create the rescue disk and boot from that, you can then
resize the partition.

No version of Windows has ever had the ability to change the
partition structure of a drive nondestructively. The only way to
do what you want is with third-party software. Partition Magic is
the best-known such program, but there are freeware/shareware
alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next Generation. It's
shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial, so you should be
able to do what you want within that 30 days. I haven't used it
myself, but it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs
here.

So why do you want Office on your C: drive?
Uninstall and custom install to your other drive.
You can also move the My Documents folder to the other drive

My Documents is already on another drive. Office got on this drive
inadvertedly and I was concerned about leaving a mess behind if I
uninstalled it.

Uninstalling Office and putting it on another drive might be an easy fix
though.

Unless you are prepared to back up data, clean the disk totally and
start over, you need a third party package. P Magic will do, but is
fairly expensive. What I use is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com
($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng.exe
to make a boot floppy.

Boot the floppy, Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on
Partition work. Highlight your second partition (the lower one), click
Resize and resize to taste. Then highlight it again and Slide,
specifying no free space after. That will leave the free space after
the C and you can highlight that and resize to use the free space.

Note that when you reboot XP will probably say 'New hardware found -
need to reboot'. That is normal, a consequence of the sizes having
changed, Reboot and all will be fine.
