VPN connection acts like dialup

When I boot my XPSP2 Home laptop with wireless, my VPN connection starts
automatically like a dialup. I have broadband cable, so it is silly that this
connection starts and connects me to a slower DSL at my work. I can only
prevent it by deleting the connection. Where is this connection in the
registry? Is there a value I can put in to convince the computer it is not a
dialup?

I have a different but probably related problem, sorry, no answer yet...

My normal internet connection over my LAN works fine except when other
ports (or at least thats what I suspect is happening) than the HTTP port
are used, eg Windows Update, streaming video etc, the "connect to" window
for a banking VPN dialup shows and actually starts dialing... Internet
settings say "Never dial".

The only solution indeed seems to be to delete the dialup entry, but that
breaks the private banking app.

Anyone got the same problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

I think I figured it out. I believe some other VPN software made a RAS entry
for my VPN. It is found (unbelievably, I might add) at C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pb k.

I renamed the extension to disable its dial function. Everything seems to be
fine so far. It no longer tries to dial, but still works.

Digging more deeply into the MS FAQ, I found that this behaviour can be
turned off by opening the Network Connections window from the control
panel. Use the "advanced" menu option and choose the preferences for dialup
option. Uncheck the automatic dialing checkbox, and there you go.

Leaves two questions unanswered though: why is this different from the
internet settings/connections "never dial" option? and why does Windows
find it necessary to dialup in the first place, having a perfect LAN
solution for Internet....

Interesting. My never dial was already set.

My culprit is the Cisco VPN, which puts the MS VPN into the ras Phone book
when installed. It is now there again and dialing. I guess I'll just have to
delete it again.

I did that and found that my banking app simply created a new file on the
first use after deletion. Checking the "disable automatic dialing" and "do
not dial when logged in" boxes did the trick for me. These are not in the
Internet options/connections tab, but in the network connections window.

Maybe you should try to contact Cisco and ask them what the meaning of all
this is.
