SP2 has caused me nothing but grief since installing it in August from a MS
CD. I cannot tell you how many hours I spent trying to diagnose my computer's
problem of hanging when using Media Player and IE. I thought I had trojans,
viruses, etc. Tried a number of AV and anti-spy programs. Did a
repair-install of XP Pro. Finally, I reformatted drive C and started all
over. Everything was going smoothly until, guess what, I re-installed SP2.
Then the same symptoms returned again until I uninstalled it and cleaned my
registers. I am forgetting SP2. Give me a reputable third-party system suite
with firewall, AV program, repair utilities, and I am all set.
I will not touch SP2 again.

If you had problems, perhaps it was some of your other software.
Did you verify compatibility with the software manufacturers for all your
software?
If you had problems with SP-2 and no other software installed, you have a
hardware problem.
Check with manufacturers for all your components for compatibility issues
with SP-2.
Bad memory among other things can cause those problems.
Seeming to function correctly without SP-2 does not prove anything.
