View Full Version : Cannot connect to ANY network

November 4th 04, 10:19 PM
I recently replaced a failed hard drive, so all the software on this SONY
PCG-FR130 laptop if fresh and mostly up-to-date. It runs XP Home and Service
Pack One. I have run the network setup wizard many times both in this method
and even a few attempts after Service Pack Two. Currently I thought I'd
start from scratch and remove Service Pack Two. I have ordered my network
devices propperly in the advanced tab in network connections and refuse to
bridge any of them. I only have the four component initially installed in
use for both devices, including file and printer sharing. Whether I use the
built in ethernet or my wireless lan external card, I cannot connect to any
network, whether my own or The University of Arizona's network. I can access
the internet with any device and on any network. I cannot see any other
computer, whether in my workgroup or not. I have a unique network id.
Rarely will it even let me open the MSHOME workgroup folder, let alone the
one above it in the hierarchy. Once I was able to see a single other
computer, but that took a few minutes to see and I still could not see it's
contents. I am sharing multiple folders. I can "remote desktop connection"
another computer only if i access it by ip and not by computer name on the
microsoft network. This is a personal PC on a school network or lower level,
so I do not require any special vpn devices to connect to a land line
ethernet. Can anyone give me a leg up on this one? I'm at my wits end and
going mad. I might even pursue computer sciences for a major just to figure
this out. Thanks for reading my life story.

I tried this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Michael Stephens>net view /domain:MSHOME
System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

is that normal?

Hmm, I went through the questionaire and it would appear that browstat
returns a number of problems; however, I am running the browser service.
What go I do from here?

D:\browstat>browstat status
Status for domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{B6DB095A-7EC8-4039-97
C7-2EB934ADDEF9}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master browser name is held by: PIRATE
Master browser is running build 2600

D:\browstat>browstat dn
Api call returned 50

D:\browstat>browstat vw 50
Unable to get backup list for on transport \device\50: The system cannot
find t
he file specified.

Mike,

if this is at home, is the computer set to use a domain? Since
you have no domain controller at home, that won't work easily,
at least not until it functions at work first.

For first tests at home I would give the computer a workgroup
name, not a domain name.

Also make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled, but the
document at http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm already mentions
this.

If you fill in the form and still can't find the solution,
please copy the selections line below the form, just above the
three buttons and post it here. Then it would be interesting to
know which of the proposals you have followed and which you
haven't.

Mike, since you seem to have a connection by IP address, it may be a matter
of workgroups. Find another PC that works properly, and check what workgroup
(or domain) it is part of. Control Panel/System/Computername and you should
see it there. You have to be in the same workgroup to "see" other computers
on your network.

It could also have something to do with user permissions, but probably not.

Well, to tell the truth, I gave up today and decided to reinstall the system
software again since I had not used it enough to build up a major library of
personal stuff. But, for the record, I was using a workgroup name and not a
domian name with the netbios over tcp/ip either enabled or disabled. I
assume that my problem was an anomaly of normal system restore probably from
disturbed installation. Thank you for your help though.

Mike,

thanks for reporting back. Yes, the installation from scratch is
always the last solution. (:-)
