extend a fade out?

Hiya... is it possible to extend the period of a black out so instead of
fading quickly over 2 or three seconds to maybe fading slowly over 5 or 6?

Yes but not as such. You have to use a black image and and Fade effect
between your clip and that. Then control the duration in the timeline view.
