View Full Version : Windows XP/SP2 shutdown problem

I have encountered a problem with extremely slow shutdown/restart in XP Home
with SP2. The system seems to hang at the "Windows is shutting down"
message. It will shutdown/restart after about 15 mins.
I have identified the "Intelligent Background Transfer Service" as the
culprit. If I try to stop this service, it fails to stop. If I disable
this service, then after a restart the system shuts down/restarts normally.
The problem with this solution is that Windows Update will not function at
all, so I need this service enabled.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Set Automatic Update service to Automatic and verify the Status is
Started and verify the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to
Manual.
Start>Run>services.msc>OK.
In the list of services, right-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply
Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
In the list of services, right-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply
Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
Click OK..

Have it on Manual start - that is enough for Windows Update, and should
allow it to be stopped once Update has finished

I worked on a friends system last night that would refuse to powerdown. It
was stuck on the "windows is shutting down" screen.
After a couple of hours I narrowed down the problem to the Windows
AutoUpdate service. I disabled the service and the PC shutsdown fine now.
However that annoying little balloon keeps poping up everytime he logs on
reminding him he may be "unprotected".
Anyone have a clue how to repair the corrupt service?
