Can't find network hardware.

[PVR]

I have three PCs on a home network. The network is cable modem, router and
access point. Two PCs use a wireless connection. These are working
correctly. The third PC is connected to the router via ethernet cable and
NIC. This PC does not have an internet connection.

Recently my HD went bad and I am slowly Restoring from backup. When I
installed WinXP/SP1 there were no icons in Control Panel/Network
Connections. My attempts to create a network connection have failed. I have
checked all connections. The LED on the NIC flickers in sync with the
connection light on the modem.

Obviously I am doing something wrong. Do I need to configure the NIC (which
came with the PC)? So far, following the Wizards in Windows is not working
for me.

I appreciate any help I can get.

In Device Manager, what do you have listed under Network Adapters?
What is the status of them?

Is there a category called Other Devices?
If so what is listed under Other Devices?
What is the status of them?

In Device Manager Nothing listed under Network Adapters, not even the title.

In Other Devices the heading (title) has a yellow '?' ahead of it. Then
there are five items with yellow '?' marks against them. One is 'Ethernet
Controller.' The others are IEEE 1284.4 printing support, HPPhotosmart 370
series, Multimedia Audio Controller and Photosmart 370 series.

Right clicking/Properties shows the driver for Ethernet Controller is not
installed and there is a button for 'Reinstall Driver.' The same is true for
some of the others. Two of the others show the device working properly and
to use a troubleshooter if there is a problem.

I guess, with your help, I now know what to do, ie Reinstall Driver. If you
have the time I would like confirmation of this point before I do the wrong
thing.

Yep, you need to reinstall the drivers for all devices that appear under
Other Devices -

Do you have a CD that came with this system that contains the drivers?

Probably the most important is to reinstall the Ethernet controller so that
you can get back on the Internet and retrieve drivers from HP.

By the way, if you connect to the Internet via a cable modem that is not
accessed through a router with built in Firewall, then be sure to turn on
the XP Internet Connection Firewall immediately or if available a third-
party firewall or you will be hit by some variation of msblaster or sasser
worm. Then get your system updated with XP Service Pack 2 from the
Windows Update site.

After installing various drivers I now have only two yellow '?' marks in
"Other
Devices." These are 'Ethernet Controller' and 'Multimedia Audio Controller.'

I have WindowsXP (Home) on an OEM CD which came with the PC. I have tried
installing the drivers from this CD without success. Again, I must be doing
something wrong. I appreciate any help you can provide.

What computer is this exactly?
Did it come with documentation?
You need to know if the Ethernet Controller
is an onboard chip on the motherboard
(sounds like it may be) or a PCI card.
Need to know exactly what Ethernet Controller
driver is needed. You may have it on CD,
otherwise it will need to be downloaded
from the Internet from another computer
(like say the one you are communicating from)
and then burned onto a CDR or Floppy Disk
(if 1.4 MB or smaller) and then installed on
the problematic computer.
