Since installing SP2 on his PC my son-in-law has experienced problems with
the settings of services. Some of these have changed. He sets them to run
automatically but on reboot they revert back. Any ideas on how he can
overcome this?

TIA

The ones that come to mind amongst other were Automatic Updates, AVG7 Update
Service, Error Reporting Service, IPSEC Services, Protected Storage,
Security Accounts Manager, Security Center, System Restore Service, TCP/IP
NetBIOS Helper, Windows Audio, Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS), Wireless Zero Configuration and some others - 19 in total.

There is no way all these services and programs should fail after
installing SP2 on a clean, well-functioning machine. We don't have any
information about your son's computer hardware, software, or whether it
was 100% spyware and virus-free, if he got any error messages, or the
like. He should take the computer to a local professional (not a
BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) rather than try and troubleshoot the
machine third-hand via you posting bits of information about his
computer in a newsgroup. In the meantime, here are links for
troubleshooting SP2 which you can pass on to him:

Thanks

He uses Sygate Personal Firewall, AVG Pro 7 and Ad-aware 6. No virus where
detected. What I fail to understand is why the settings aren't being saved
when he changes them via services.msc etc. Could this be some sort of
permissions thing?
