I finally figured out what was causing my problem with
Windows/MSN Messenger not signing in.
Turns out that simply having the application Steganos
Internet Anonyomizer (version 5) installed on your system
(didn't need to be active) will kill MSN and Windows
Messenger.
I uninstalled it and I can connect via messenger with no
problem now.
Also, I found a program called Trillian
(http://www.ceruleanstudios.com) that allows you to
connect to Messenger, AOL AIM, Yahoo Messenger, IRC, ICQ
users. And it will connect to Messenger users even when
Messenger won't allow you to sign in (when Steganos is
installed).
The only drawback to Trillian is that you can't do webcam
video sharing or share apps/whiteboard like you can with
Messenger. If you don't have Steganos installed and
don't need those Messenger features you may want to see
if you can Trillian.
Hope this helps others. Take care!
