View Full Version : Messenger 4.X and 6.0

I installed the 6.0 thinking that it would upgrade the 4.X.

Imagine my surprise when I still had 4.6 and 6.0 on the machine.

Now when I goto add remove programs 4.6 is not even there...

I suspect it was part of the upgrade to IE 6 and would like to know
how to uninstall 4.6 without harming 6.0?

Take a look at Doug Knox's Website at this link for detailed instructions on
how to disable your Windows Messenger.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger.htm

When you do this your Windows Messenger won't show up in your taskbar
anymore

However if you want to completely remove/uninstall Windows Messenger from
Windows XP can be found at this website made by Jonathan Kay.
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

Follow the steps and the pictures that the website has and you shouldn't
have anymore problems. Uninstalling Windows Messenger can disable some of
the messenger features such as Whiteboard Sharing, and others on MSN
Messenger if you're using that.

Greetings Doman,

Windows Messenger 4.7 and MSN Messenger 6.0 are separate products, hence why MSN Messenger
did not upgrade Windows Messenger.

You can remove Windows Messenger 4.7, but if you do, you will be preventing Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize Messenger
from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by
opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when
Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though. As
well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 6 to work
properly.

Hi Gary,

If I disable Messenger 4X.. this will not prevent the messenger features
such as Whiteboard Sharing, etc to work within MSN Messenger 6, will it?

Thanks,
Barb

Hi Barb,

If you disable or uninstall using the links Gary gave you, no, Remote Assistance, Whiteboard
and Application Sharing will *not* work in MSN Messenger 6. If you'd like to retain these
features, but not have Windows Messenger conflicting, open up the main Windows Messenger
window (or simply run it from the Start Menu, All Programs), click the Tools menu, then
Options, then Preferences, uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts" and click OK.
