Is there a way to disable "autoplay?"

I've just started using XP professional (I used NT4 for years) and it's a
bother when I insert a removable disk (CD, zip, flashdrive, floppy) that a
screen comes up that I have to close.

I don't mind keeping the autorun function for installing programs, tho I'm
willing to sacrifice it since I don't install very often.

TIA

Right click on your removable drive, select properties, select Autorun tab,
follow directions

There's a way to customize what Windows will do with each CD type. Now,
most help resources give the first half of the instructions, but there's
more to it. At least in my experience.

* In My Computer, right-click the CD drive you want, and choose Properties.
* Click the AutoPlay tab. You'll see a drop-list of various CD types,
and a list of possible handlers for each type.

Most instructions tell you to choose each type, and then the handler you
want to use for it. This is only half-right.

* For instance, choose Music Files from the drop-list, then "Select an
action to perform" to allow you to choose from the list. Choose your
handler (if listed - if not, best to choose Take No Action). Click
Apply, and OK.

Now you have to repeat the above steps for each CD type and handler
pair. From what i've experienced, this is the only way your choices will
be stored properly. i can't explain why.

It's a mess, and tedious, and overcomplicated. But i haven't seen a
better way to manage it.

Go to Microsoft's web site and download TweakUI for Windows XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
Install it. Note that it has a different interface than the previous
versions. Start it by clicking on Start/Programs/Powertoys for Windows
XP/TweakUI for Windows XP. When in the program, click the + by MyComputer
and the one by Autoplay. Next click the Drives menu and then uncheck any
drive you desire to disable autoplay on. Next, click on Apply. Then, click
on Types and clear the check mark for Removable drives and click on Apply.
It is important to click on apply after changes have been made to each
window before going onto the next window.

i might also mention that TweakUI allows you to choose what drives have
AutoPlay enabled (which seems to be seperate from the Autorun used on
software CDs.

Click the MyComputer + in TweakUI, then AutoPlay.
Under Drives, uncheck the drives you don't want using AutoPlay.
You can also clear any check boxes under Types.

Dunno how much any of this stuff will help, but good luck.

Folks, thanks for the idea about TweakUI. I plan to try it (I haven't had
time yet): it sounds like it will do what I want.
