View Full Version : Messenger 4.7 vs 6.0
WD

In response to repeated on-line dire warnings that I HAD
to update my factory-installed XP-PRO Messenger 4.7, I
downloaded and installed version 6.0.
Now, I have ver 6.0 running, and STILL apparently have ver
4.7 in there too as I continue to get a sort of popup box
warning me that I have to update. Says something
about .NET.
I dont intend to really use the instant messenger service
and mainly want to get rid of the annoying message.
Please advise. thanks.

They are different.
4.7 is Windows Messenger.
6.0 is MSN Messenger.

I don't know how many times this was mentioned in previous
posts. Guess people just don't spend the time reviewing
them.

that's true, but however.. uninstalling 4.7 doesn't stop
it loading.. so now I've just manually deleted
msmsgs.exe.. hope that will help

MSN Messenger 6 unistalls via the normal route. 4.7 unistalls as below
(quoted from Jonathan Kay)
Have fun,
Alex

DELETING MESSENGER
To remove MSN Messenger 5 or 6, click Start, then Control Panel, then Add or
Remove Programs, click MSN Messenger and then click the 'Remove' button.
For Windows Messenger, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the
messenger icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then
click the start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and

Why won't MicroSoft give us "normal" options to remove
programs like this... :S

Hi,
Please keep in mind that if you use this, Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application
Sharing will no longer function and you may experience some problems loading some
applications which integrate Messenger.

Greetings WD,
Since you don't actually use Messenger, I'd recommend that you remove MSN Messenger 6 by
clicking Start, then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, click MSN Messenger 6 and
then click 'Remove'. Then instead of having MSN Messenger 6, install a more recent version
of Windows Messenger 4.7, which *will* upgrade your present Windows Messenger (and will not
show the Upgrade message). You can find it here:

Dear Maarten,
I uninstalled windows messenger 5 times!! It always comes back. the problem
for me is, that it disconnects me spontaneously from the internet. Last time
I removed it I also deleted a registry setting:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MessengerSer vice]
I do not know what damage this does, but from now on msmsge.exe no longer
starts up spontaneously, although the directory that I had deleted also was
restored at next start up. In the way I use my computer I do not seem to
use this registry setting.
Erik.
