My installation of MSN Messenger (v6.0) on Windows XP
will not conduct a voice conversation when the Windows XP
firewll is enabled. What do I need to change to enable
voice conversation through the Messenger service?

Greetings Goddy,
You may just need to clear the Messenger forwarded ports within the Internet Connection
Firewall. To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network
Connections. Right click the internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced
Tab, verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is on, and then click the Settings button.
Check to see if there are 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entries. If so, click each 'msmsgs' or
'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the
Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger and try a voice conversation again (with
the firewall still on).

Thanks! I haven't had a chance to try it yet; I believe
that your recommendation will fix the problem. I will
let you know!!!

Hi gjf,
It may or may not work (in your particular situation there may be another issue), but it's
worth a try.

Jonathan --
Indeed I have tried it and it did not work (with
qualifications) I have set up my computer with an
administrator account separate from the account that I
regularly use. The account that I use for all normal
activity is a power user account. The audio messenger
does work for the administrator account ( probably even
with the two -- TCP and UDP 'msmsgs'-- services that I
have now deleted). Voice messging does not seem to work
for accounts with lesser permission values.
It does not seem proper that I should have to diminish
the protection afforded by the lower grade account in
order to use the audio messaging with the firewall.
