View Full Version : sp2- rebooting all the time

Background:
I waited till last night to download SP2. Did all the recommended
preparations in advance. I use XP (obviously), Norton Firewall and Antivirus,
and use SBC Yahoo.
The problem I am experiencing is my computer reboots without warning from
time to time. When it reboots I get the Windows screen "Checking File system
on C, type of file FAT23....One disc needs to be checked for
consistency...Volume serial #....,Windows is verifying..."
This has happened many times and also happens when I am not even toucking
anything. After it checks, everything is fine...until it reboots again.
I did have to redifine the space allocated when I started the install. I
believe it was 1600 and I changed it to 1800. Don't know if this has anything
to do with my problem.
Any suggestions on solving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly do you mean, "redefine the space...1600 to 1800"?

You will have to excuse my ignorance. Not real computer savvy but I
seem(ed) to get by.
When I started the install of sp2, I got a window saying that I needed more
space (I think that was the term) in order to do the install. I had to make
room for it by changing the number. Sorry I don't know how else to explain
it.

I'm sorry, but since you can't explain what you did, I don't know what
you did. Unless someone else reading your post has a flash of
brilliance and thinks they know what you did, your best bet might be to
take the machine to a good local repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA
type of store). A professional who actually has the machine in front of
him will have a far better chance of diagnosing and fixing it. I'm
sorry I was unable to help you.

I will try to explain it better. When I started the install of sp2, the very
first step that I encountered was a window saying that I needed more space
(or room) in order to do the install.
I had to make room for the install by changing the allocated space. Like I
said, I don't know if this causes my machine to reboot to scan disc. But this
problem did start as soon as sp2 was installed.
Anybody with a 'flash of brilliance' that might be able to save me the money
to go local repair shop?
One more hint: I have found a website that causes my machine to do the
booting thing every time I go there so now I can make it happen (as well as
when it does it randomly). It's a gaming site www.isketch.net. As soon as I
click "play now", it boots to the blue screen checking my disc. I know that
that site is powered by Shockwave and cannot find any fixes for sp2 on their
site.

After someone suggested disabling automatic restart in my system, I was able
to locate where the problem is. The problem seems to be caused by the
following file: nv4_disp.dll
After some research I have discovered that that is a nvidea product. I
cannot get support on nvidea’s site, however, since they only offer support
for dvd products.
Under properties, the nv4_disp.dll lists the product as:
NVIDEA Compatable Windows 2000 Display Driver, Version 56.73
Product Version: 6.14.10.5673
I also cannot find any downloadable updates to those affected by problems
from sp2 install.
Once again any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would reinstall the driver. It can be found here:

I was there earlier and once agin this is where my ignorance sets in so I
apologize in advance. They list many different steps on what driver you want
to download but I don't know where to begin. Is it a Graphics Driver? A
Platform/nForce Driver? Multimedia software driver?
And on step two have no clue where to if it's Gefoce, Quadro, Unified
Driver, Nvidia system Utility. wdm driver, etc...
Step 3 same thing. I am usind xp but the properties list it as 2000...

You need to find out what video card is in your machine. Look in Device
Manager under Display. It probably is some flavor of Nvidia GeForce
unless you have a laptop. If you still aren't sure, then post back what
you see in the Device Manager. Or go to the Display applet in Control
panel and click on Advanced for the Adapter settings. The Adapter means
your video card.
Then go back to www.nvidia.com. Click on Graphics Drivers in the left
column, then which one (probably a GeForce, but you need to be sure) in
the middle column, and your operating system in the last column, which
is Windows XP. Then download the driver to someplace you'll find it,
like your Desktop. Once you are finished downloading, go to the
Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. Find the entry for Nvidia
Display Drivers and uninstall it. Reboot when it asks you to.
When you get back into Windows, double-click on the icon for the Nvidia
driver file you downloaded. This will start the installation program.
Follow the wizard and reboot when it asks you. After you are back in
Windows, go to the Display applet again and set the resolution the way
you want it, like 1024 x 768.
Post back if you have more questions.

Just wanted to put closure on this thread for anyone experiencing similar
problems.
I uninstalled sp2 and everything is back to normal...so far. I took no other
action and am able to access everything that caused the booting process, so
who knows?
From other message boards I got the message that Nvidea was not following
through on updates related to SP2, so that's why I took the action I did.
Thanks again for all who helped me and I will probably be back whenever I am
forced by microsoft to install that evil sp2 thingie.
